Hot Tub Electrical Requirements

The hot tub system of the Aquavoss AV-2 and the Aquavoss AV-8 runs on a 220V-240V single-phase hard-wired electrical connection. As such, the electrical hookup must be completed by a licensed electrician. The electrician will run wiring from your main electrical panel to a sub-panel that must be located a minimum of 5 feet away from the spa/hot tub. From there, wiring will run directly into the Balboa control system.

Note:
On the AV-2, these instructions apply specifically to the hot tub side of the unit. The AV-8 is an all-hot-tub model, so these instructions apply to the entire unit.

As shown above, run conduit and wiring from the main electrical breaker to a GFCI breaker box that is installed a minimum of 5 feet from the spa/hot tub (a GFCI breaker box is not included with the AV-2 or AV-8). Connect only to a circuit protected by a Class A Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) or Residual Current Device (RCD) mounted at least 5’ (1.52m) from the water line of the spa/hot tub and in line of sight from the equipment compartment.

Run conduit and wiring from the breaker box into the Balboa Control System.

The spa/hot tub must be wired with a 50 amp, single-phase, 220-240 volt, four-wire service (two lines, one neutral, and one ground). The grounding conductor must not be less than #10 AWG. Use minimum 8 AWG copper conductors only (dependent on wire type used).

A wiring diagram is located on the back side of the Balboa Control System for your technician to reference. The diagram is also shown below:

The AV-2 and AV-8 are equipped with a power indicator that also serves a diagnostic function. The indicator light will begin blinking if the heater high-limit thermostat has tripped. If the power indicator light is blinking, follow the instructions in the Troubleshooting section to identify and correct the cause.

Once the spa/hot tub has been filled with water, it is important to test all circuit breakers. Push the “TEST” button on each GFCI breaker and observe it click OFF. Wait 30 seconds, then push the breaker switch to the OFF position and then back to the ON position.

If any GFCI breaker fails to operate in this manner, there may be an electrical malfunction. In that case, immediately turn off all circuits and do not use the spa/hot tub until the issue has been corrected by an authorized service agent.

It is also important to note that removing or bypassing any GFCI breaker will result in an unsafe spa/hot tub condition and will void the warranty.
